The Role of the Historic Preservation Commission

The Historic Preservation Commission is responsible for identifying and designating San Francisco landmarks and buildings in the City's historic districts. It consists of seven Commissioners and a Commission Secretary.

More specifically, the Historic Preservation Commission reviews and approves applications for Certificates of Appropriateness for alterations, site improvements and new construction affecting San Francisco's designated landmarks, buildings and sites within historic districts. The Commission also makes recommendations to the Mayor, Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission and other City agencies concerning amendments to Articles 10 and 11 of the Planning Code.

Hearing Schedule

The Historic Preservation Commission holds a public hearing (also known as a "Commission Meeting") twice monthly to carry out its duties.
